A bit about Camping / Mountaineering Stoves...
Commonly referred to as Camping stoves as they are predominately used when camping.
However camping is a very broad term & whilst most stoves will cope with all types
of camping some are better suited to mountaineering rather than campsite camping and vice
versa.
To simplify the vast array of different makes models and styles of stove available we have categorized them by the fuel they use.
1. Gas (propane & butane mix) comes in a variety of different pressurised canisters. Gas stoves very easy to set up, connect the gas and ignite, some have built in ignition. Gas stove are very controllable so you can rapid boil or gentle fry. The largest drawback is that the performance of gas stoves deteriorate in cold conditions as the pressure within the canister reduces. Altitude has a negative affect on gas stoves too, the largest effect being low temperature associated with high altitude. Other minor negatives are cost of fuel, and not being able to fly with fuel.

2. Petroleum Based Fuels - (petrol, diesel, kerosene and White gas) The fuel is pressurised in these stoves manually usually via an integral pump. They also need priming to pre-heat the fuel and convert it to gas. This means the liquid fuel stove will take a little more effort to light. On the positive side a liquid fuel stove will perform better in a wider range of situations and will have lower running costs. Liquid fuel stoves will often be multi fuel stoves, burning a range of liquid fuels thereby giving them more versatility. They also use fuel more economically than other camping stoves, giving you less fuel to carry for the same amount of cooking.
3. Methylated Spirit - These stoves rely on the vapour emitted from a static burner. Methylated Spirit is generally a safer fuel type as it's less explosive and burns at a lower temperature. This does however mean your stove will taker longer to cook your dinner. The simple design of meths burners makes them ideal for youth groups. The design also makes them very effective in windy conditions venting the flame, making it burn fiercely.
