Via Ferrata or Klettersteig

Literally translated Via Ferrata means "iron way" initially I understood that these "iron ways" were first built in the dolomites for troop movement  in the first world war, enabling positions that would otherwise be unobtainable to be reached on the front line. After further research it appears the Austrians were building Via Ferrata as early as 1850, 19 years later a route was completed on Southwest Ridge of the GroSlockner (3797m), Austria's highest mountain.

The sport of Via Ferrata is becoming more popular as it gives access to exposed high rock faces that would otherwise be inaccessible to all but the best rock climbers.
As well as existing wartime routes many more are still being constructed particularly in Switzerland making use of chairlifts & cable cars to get to the route.

Via Ferrata consist of series of ladders and shelves made with large metal staples attached to rock faces some are joined with rope ladders and tunnels. Each route is given a grading from 1 to 5 (or in some cases the letters A to E), grade one (A) is little more than an assisted walk, whereas grade five (E) you need to have some good climbing skills.
